NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Nashville turned into ‘Survivorville’ this weekend.

A convention underway at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel and Convention Center has brought together thousands of women cancer survivors from across the country. The event has been specifically for women who have won their battles with various types of cancer. Throughout the weekend, participants received health information, educational resources, and support.

“Twenty-seven years ago I was diagnosed with cancer,” said Karen Shayne, Co-Founder of the Women Survivors Alliance. “This is my way of giving back and paying it forward.”

Shayne and fellow cancer survivor Judy Pearson started the convention three years ago. It has continued to grow each year. Over the past two years, the convention has brought together nearly 2000 women from 49 states and five countries.

“Cancer doesn’t end when the treatment does,” said Pearson. “You are left with all kinds of physical challenges, emotional challenges, intimacy challenges, and family challenges. The list goes on and on.”

Saturday night, survivors took the stage to share their stories as part of an event called, “My 2nd Act.” For participants, it was an emotional and inspiring experience.

“I think being able to be here you really do get a sense of positive energy and enthusiasm for being alive,” said Ruth Bachman, a soft-tissue Sarcoma survivor.

“This convention has been an amazing experience,” said Karen Reynolds, a breast cancer survivor, who attended the convention for the first time. “It’s about empowering women, educating women, and letting them know about ways to live a healthier, whole life.”

The conference was set to wrap up Sunday on National Cancer Survivors Day. A 5K run has been scheduled to start at 9 a.m. at Public Square Park in Nashville.
