CADIZ, Ky. – Officials in Trigg County, Kentucky said they’ve opened an investigation after a child accidentally shot his younger sister.

According to a social media account for the Trigg County Sheriff’s Office, they responded to the incident on KY 272 Sunday afternoon.

Authorities said a 5-year-old boy was able to get a .22 caliber revolver that had been left unattended on a counter in the living room.

That’s when officials said he accidentally shot his 4-year-old sister in the abdomen while she was watching television in her bedroom.

Those with the sheriff’s office said they arrested a 19-year-old man on charges of first degree wanton endangerment for bringing the gun into the home and leaving it unattended around a child.

The sister’s condition was not released.

Authorities said the investigation was ongoing, and additional charges were possible.
