A 7-year-old Robertson County student was cited after bringing a loaded gun to school.
Westside Elementary School was placed on a soft lockdown while the Springfield Police officers were called.
Officials said the student had been showing the loaded 9-millimeter handgun to other students and was carrying it in a backpack.
The child was cited for unlawful possession of a firearm, and released to DCS for placement.
Officials with Robertson County Schools released the statement below following the incident.
On Thursday morning, May 19, a weapon was confiscated from a student at Westside Elementary School in Springfield.The school was immediately placed on a soft lockdown and Central Office personnel were notified. The Springfield Police Department, and the Department of Children’s Services were contacted and responded to assist with the situation. Parents were notified by School Messenger of the lockdown, which was lifted shortly after the police arrived. The student was removed from the school and the Springfield Police Department and Department of Children’s Services continue to investigate.
