Alleged Burglar Caught By K9 Officer In Madison

Posted

An alleged burglar and convicted felon was captured by a K9 officer after two home burglaries were reported in Madison.

Officials with Metro police said 36-year-old David Lauderdale was taken into custody early Monday morning by metro police dog, Echo, and his partner, Officer J.D. Young.

Lauderdale, a convicted felon, has been accused of burglarizing two homes, one of which was occupied by a woman at the time.

The first incident was reported around 7 a.m. on Roosevelt Drive. A neighbor apparently noticed that someone had kicked open the front door of the home.

About 30 minutes later, a woman called 911 and said a man was inside her home. She was able to seek refuge inside a closet until police could arrive.

Shortly after, an officer saw the suspect's vehicle leaving the home and radioed for additional help.

From there, police said Lauderdale parked the SUV on Nesbit Drive and tried to hide inside the vehicle.

Two officers who approached the SUV were not aware he was inside the vehicle. Lauderdale then allegedly put the vehicle in reverse and accelerated, ramming the front of the Patrol car parked near the driveway entrance.

In response, both officers fired and struck the SUV. Lauderdale was not injured.

He was able to get away before being spotted again on Graycroft Avenue. He tried to flee the scene on foot, but was stopped by K9 Officer Echo and additional Metro officers.

Five TVs and a laptop were recovered from the Tahoe.  Four of the five TVs were taken during the Roosevelt Avenue and Heritage Drive burglaries.

Police said Lauderdale had an outstanding warrant for aggravated burglary. He’s expected to be charged with two counts of aggravated burglary.

He has previous convictions for cocaine possession, theft and domestic violence.
