ANTIOCH, Tenn. (WTVF) — An Antioch mother is seeking justice for her son's death after he was hit and killed by a vehicle last month.

Loneliness isn't a feeling Sharron Sims is used to. She had to bury her son 28-year-old Dewayne after he was struck by a vehicle walking home at night along Hamilton Church Road on Feb. 26.

"It's painful, it's hurtful. I wouldn't want anyone to have to go through that. Nothing that keeps my mind off of my son, he stays on my brain," Sims said.

The mother of 5 contacted Delishia Porterfield, District 29 councilmember-elect, for help to try and make Hamilton Church Road safer.

"She's really worked with me and my family, We've been talking about ways to get the community come together and try and make the area safe and it's not just this area. Other areas in honor of my son Dewayne Sims," she said.

"From my understanding this is the second pedestrian that's been struck on that particular street so we had a lot of conversation around what we can do to make the area safer. It really is a dangerous area that we have to do something about it especially with it being dark and no lighting if someone is driving it's hard to see someone walking there," Porterfield said.

Sims and Porterfield hope funding for a sidewalk or more street lighting along Hamilton Church Road will be discussed in the future. Porterfield suggested people think about what they are wearing if they have to walk along a busy road.

"It would be beneficial if they wore light colored clothing, carried a flashlight, or wore some type of reflectors on their clothing so drivers in that area are able to see them in order to stay safe," she said.

Metro police spokesman Don Aaron said Sims was walking along the westbound lane of Hamilton Church Road when he was hit by the 2014 Altima driven by Carlos Valle Romero, 20, of Antioch.
