NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — April 5 will be a special day in Nashville for the Belmont basketball program.
Mayor David Briley announced April 5 will be declared Rick Byrd Day in Music City.
Byrd retired earlier this week after 33 years as the head men's basketball coach of the Bruins.
He led the Bruins to 805 wins, including the school's first NCAA Tournament win in 2019.
Under Byrd, Belmont went to the NCAA Tournament eight times in the last 14 years.
Belmont is encouraging fans around the country to wear a sweater vest Friday in honor of Byrd's gameday wardrobe.
Fans can also post well-wishes to social media by using the hashtag #rickbyrdday.
