A man has been arrested in the death of a three-year-old girl he was babysitting.
Officials with the Metro Nashville Police Department confirmed 26-year-old Christopher J. Riley was arrested Thursday.
Riley has been charged with first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse.
The three-year-old girl he babysat, identified as Laylani Rose Stevens, was taken by her mother to the hospital late Saturday night. The toddler was immediately transferred to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital.
Doctors confirmed she had extensive head injuries, as well as internal injuries. The child passed away Sunday afternoon.
The mother had reportedly asked Riley, a friend, to babysit after she could not arrange for another babysitter.
Police said the mother was working Saturday afternoon and evening. Whe she returned to her home on Highway 70 around 10 o'clock that night, she discovered her three-year-old unresponsive. She told authorities the child was not injured when she left for work.
Riley told the mother the injuries were caused by falls. Doctors, however, found the injuries inconsistent with falling. The investigation remained ongoing.
