NASHVILLE, Tenn. - An historic theater in Nashville is launching a new fundraising campaign to restore the 90 year old building.
The goal is to raise $4.5 million, and $2.4 million has already been donated.
Stephanie Silverman, Executive Director of the Belcourt Theatre, said the building is showing signs of age, and some parts haven't been updated in 50 years.
"We are having things slow to the end of their life to the point that it doesn't make sense to keep patching and trying to go forward," said Silverman. "What we’re doing is a long overdue, long planned renovation and restoration on the Belcourt Theatre."
The project includes replacing the building's HVAC, eletrical and plumbing systems, improving restrooms to be wheelchair-accessible, expanding the lobby, and adding a new second floor screening room and classroom.
"People will be able to engage with the Belcourt in an even more exciting way," said Silverman. "We're excited to really preserve and protect this building so it is here for the next 90 years."
Construction is scheduled to begin in early January 2016 and will take five months. The theatre will be closed during that period, but will host other pop up events in other venues across the city.
