COLUMBIA, Tenn. – The body of a juvenile drowning victim has been pulled from the Duck River in Maury County.
Authorities said 14-year-old Martarius Clemons accidentally fell in the river near the Blue Springs Swimming Hole around 4:50 p.m. Saturday. His body was recovered Monday morning.
More than 60 first responders were involved in the search efforts. The teen's body was found around 9:30 a.m. not far from where he went under two days ago.
Witnesses told authorities Clemons went under, and friends attempted to make a rescue due to him not being able to swim. Officials said Clemons never resurfaced.
Sonar and dive teams were deployed Saturday night, but the search was called off until Sunday morning due to darkness. Recent rain made the river swell, murky and strengthened the current which made search efforts even more difficult.
The popular swimming hole has reopened. Officials warned that anyone who plans to be on or near the edge of the river should wear a Coast Guard approved life jacket.
