The body of an 18-year-old kayaker has been recovered in Smith County.
Reports stated the teen, later identified as Tyler Flanary, was reported missing around 1:30 p.m. Saturday. He was last seen with his father on Betty’s Island.
Officials had confirmed on Saturday his father was safe and helped with the search.
Reports stated the two did not have life jackets. They realized they had passed the boat ramp, and because there was so much water, they capsized.
The father was rescued by people who were fishing near the bank.
The Smith County Rescue Squad searched the Caney Fork River and between the Betty’s Island boat ramp and Stonewall Club Springs Road.
Authorities confirmed Flanary's kayak was found Saturday, and crews continued to search until dark. The search resumed around 7 a.m. Sunday.
Smith County EMS officials confirmed Flanary’s body was found Sunday.
Further details had not been released.
