FRANKLIN, Tenn. – A 35-year-old man was being held on bond after investigators said he had sex with a 13-year-old family friend.

Officials from the Franklin Police Department said Silvestre Orpeza-Balderas surrendered himself to authorities at the Williamson County Courthouse Thursday.

A warrant had been issued for his arrest and an alert sent out to the public after concerns Balderas might flee to Mexico.

Police believed Balderas suspected they were searching for him. He had reportedly turned off his phone, abandoned his apartment and failed to show up for work.

After apparent pressure from the publicity, Balderas unexpectedly showed up at the courthouse.

Little details were released about the alleged incident between Balderas and the teenager, but he was charged with aggravated statutory rape. Other charges were expected to be filed in the case.

Bond was set at $250,000. A hearing was scheduled for August 27.
