HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Hendersonville Police officials warned the public, specifically local businesses, of a scam that's being called the "the telephone forward scam."
In the scam, a person will ask a business to use their phone for reasons ranging from car trouble to a dead cell phone. When they make a call, the scammer is actually forwarding the business' phone to an unknown cell phone.
With calls being forwarded to a cell, the scammer can get credit card information from people who think they're calling the business to make a payment over the phone.
The scam has also used to trick businesses who need to call another business to verify funds for a paper check.
Officials warned business owners to always monitor how their phones are used and to periodically call their own phone number to ensure the number has not been forwarded.
