The spill by a driver with the Tennessee Recycling Services, LLC caused a smelly mess on the already wet road from the morning rains.
Police reported a three-inch layer of the muck coating the right lane, which has caused traffic to back up to the interstate. Crews were on the scene power-washing the road.
Reports stated the tailgate broke, and each time the truck stopped, more sewage would come out. The truck remained about 3/4 full.
Business owners described the smell is described as "horrible."
Officials with the Tennessee Highway Patrol were conducting a commercial vehicle inspection. Reports stated the truck was temporarily fixed.
