A big grant has been awarded to a group that has been trying to spread a popular civil rights training program.

The Nashville Public Library has helped put on the training, called "Civil Rights and a Civil Society," for more than 400 law enforcement officers.

Officials said a new $25,000 grant will allow them to open up the training to the general public, through members of the Metro Nashville Police Department's Citizens Police Academy.

The group held a training session Monday evening in the library’s civil rights room.

Organizers said it's important to bring the training to more people because the issue of civil rights affects everyone, not just police officers.

“It’s beyond just the police department, so we utilize this course to address those biases and address those differences so we'll all feel more comfortable talking about race relations,” said Andrea Blackman, the training leader.

The next "Civil Rights and a Civil Society" training session has been scheduled for September, and be held for the current class in the police academy.
