KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – A former deputy for Claiborne County has been accused of extorting money from an individual he was investigating.

Officials with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said 49-year-old Robert Glenn Chadwell has been charged with one count of extortion and one count of bribery by a public servant.

Chadwell was accused of taking money from someone in exchange for not pursuing drug and weapons charges against him. Agents began investigating him Tuesday.

During an undercover operation Thursday, Chadwell allegedly accepted $2,000 from the person and requested additional cash as part of the agreement.

He was taken into custody and booked into the Claiborne County Jail, where he was held on a $500,000 bond.

Chadwell has since been fired from the sheriff’s office.
