Controversial Ultrasound Bill Fails

A bill that would require abortion clinics to offer their patients the opportunity to view an ultra sound has failed.

Originally, this bill was explained as one that would make it a requirement for all women visiting abortion clinics to get an ultra sound.

That bill didn't gain much momentum; so on Tuesday, Representative Rick Womick, explained an amendment he made to it.

Womick said, "Just like she gets to choose whether to have an abortion, she should be able to see the ultra sound and be fully informed."

He said the amendment would give women the choice to view an ultra sound, not force them to have one.

Representative Matthew Hill said he's voting no again, even with the change.

Matthew Hill said, "65% of all abortions in the State of Tennessee are now done before 9 weeks. An abdominal ultrasound is unlikely to show a woman in early stages the humanity that is there."

Womick has filed several abortion bills in the past. He said he will look into proposing this one again next year.
