NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — It's a group Nashville voters said they wanted, but now state lawmakers say they may try to strip some of its power.
Metro Council has selected the members for the Community Oversight Board to oversee the actions of Metro Police, but Republicans in the State Legislature say they may bring forward legislation to limit what the board can do - particularly its ability to compel testimony in its investigations.
Nashville Vice Mayor Jim Schulman says he understands the state has the power to overrule city laws in some cases, but he says he wants to see the board in action first.
"This hasn't even started yet, we haven't even got the 11 people together to get the procedures together," Shulman said. "I think what I'd love to see --on behalf of the city since they wanted it -- give it a chance, lets get it started."
