Metro Council members tackled several pivotal ordinances and topics during their council meeting.
By a voice vote, the council voted to advance Nashville's plan to decriminalize small amounts of marijuana. However, it still needs a third vote to take effect.
The law would significantly cut the penalties for someone found with a half-ounce of marijuana or less.
Currently, people charged with marijuana possession face a misdemeanor with up to a year in jail and a $2,500 fine.
The ordinance, introduced by Councilman Dave Rosenberg and two other council members, would reduce that punishment to a fine of just $50.
The council also took up a few measures on short-term rentals.
One that passed during Tuesday night's meeting would allow the codes department to issue stop-work orders to renters who violate regulations.
This would apply to rental sites like Air BnB and VBRO listed in Nashville.
