A 77-year-old man that was killed while walking along a road in Sumner County was collecting aluminum cans with his wife.
Officials with the Sumner County Sheriff's office said Charles Scruggs was walking with his wife 72-year-old Mary Scruggs when they were both hit by a vehicle.
She was LifeFlighted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in critical, but stable condition. Her condition has since improved, but she remained in the hospital.
The crash happened Monday evening on Rock Bridge Road between Gallatin and Bethpage. The couple was walking along the side of the road picking up cans
The couple was hit by an 18-year-old driving westbound in a Chevy Blazer
Police said their initial investigation indicated that the width of the road and the position of the sun may have been a contributing factor. Drugs and alcohol tests were pending.
They said the driver was neither arrested or cited.
