COWAN, Tenn. (WTVF) — A Cowan man died while he was in the custody of police and being transported to Franklin County jail Thursday, the Franklin County Sheriff's Office said.

Around 3:30 p.m., Cowan police responded to a disturbance complaint on Chestnut Street that was called in. When officers arrived, they found 47-year-old Gary Scott, who appeared to be confused and incoherent.

The officers took him into custody and put him in the back of their patrol vehicle.

When an ambulance arrived, medical treatment was attempted by paramedics, but Scott became combative and refused the treatment. Officers then began driving him to the Franklin County jail.

When they arrived at the jail, Scott was found unresponsive in the back of the vehicle.

Personnel at the sheriff's office attempted CPR while they waited for the ambulance, which then took Scott to Southern Tennessee Regional Health System.

Scott was pronounced deceased at the hospital at 4:30 p.m.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating this incident.
