More than 700 people in Rutherford County were without electricity after a car crashed into a power pole.

The crash happened overnight Monday at Old Nashville Highway at Amanda Lane in Murfreesboro.

Witnesses said the driver ran into the telephone pole and then fled the scene.

Deputies with the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office were searching throughout the area to find the driver.

The crash knocked out the power in the surrounding area. Officials said the car was the only thing holding the pole up.

Traffic was detoured on Burleson Land with crews with MTEMC worked to repair the damage and restore power.

Officials expected traffic to be congested on Old Nashville Highway during the morning commute, and have asked drivers to find alternate routes if possible.
