NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — A wintry mix of freezing rain and sleet has prompted a Storm 5 Alert for Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky, and crews are making sure roads are safe for drivers tonight.

Tennessee Department of Transportation crews are working hard in Northwest Tennessee, where an Ice Storm Warning is in effect. Officials from TDOT are advising drivers to take it slow there.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is also working hard. They anticipate snow and ice almost every night this week, so crews will be treating roads in the state's 12 western most counties.

The American Red Cross Tennessee region has teams at the ready just in case of severe weather today and Thursday. To get through the rest of the week, they recommend having an emergency kit with food and water ready.

Also, try to stay indoors as much as you can and be sure to have warm clothes at all times.

If you do need to go out, make sure you have a full tank of gas. While you're out, keep the heat on in your home, and don't set the temperature below 55 degrees.

They also recommend checking on friends and family as well to make sure everyone is staying safe.
