Cross Plains tobacco barn destroyed in large fire

CROSS PLAINS, Tenn. (WTVF) — A tobacco barn in Cross Plains was destroyed in a large fire on Labor Day.

The barn on Owens Chapel Road is owned by the Chowning family, according to Smokey Barn News.

The fire broke out around 6 p.m. Monday and eight acres of tobacco were lost in the fire, Jackson added.

Cross Plains Fire Chief Tommy Jackson told Smokey Barn News the barn was in the process of firing tobacco but a definitive cause of the fire was not understood.

He said it may be difficult to determine the cause.

Cross Plains Fire, Orlinda Fire, The White House Community Volunteer Fire Department and Robertson County EMS all responded to the fire.
