Sheriff's Deputies in Bedford County have warned residents to be alert after shootings at three churches and an agricultural center over the last three nights.
The Bedford County sheriff said the shell casings left behind led him to believe the same person is responsible for the overnight vandalism.
One church, the Horse Mountain Church of Christ, was hit two times in two separate nights, with a total of 20 rounds, according to the sheriff’s office.
The sheriff said the shells were fired by a high powered assault rifle, and he's worried if the shootings continue, the bullets could fly through the gunman’s target and potentially hit someone.
The sheriff said he has no leads so far, and wants people to be on the lookout, reporting any overnight gunshots immediately.
“Who knows, if the suspect will do this, what will they not do?” asked Sheriff Austin Swing. “The possibility exists that it could result in them shooting anything. It’s kind of a scary thought.”
The sheriff said he's worried more damage to churches could be discovered Sunday morning as people head to their churches for the first time since last week.
