MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WTVF) — After multiple people were killed or hurt in accidents along the same Rutherford County road, there is a new push to make it safer for drivers.
Rutherford County sheriff’s deputies and Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers will be increasing patrols on State Route 96 East or Lascassas Pike during morning and evening rush hour. They will implement a “zero tolerance” policy on speeding and will issue citations. If convicted, the driver will face a minimum fine of $293.50.
Five people died and 29 people suffered serious injuries last year in 74 crashes on a ten mile stretch of road between the Murfreesboro city limits and the Cannon County line.
Most recently, deputies responded to a fiery, head-on crash last week in Milton. No one was killed in that crash.
Drivers say speeding on the road is a common problem. As more people have moved to Lascassas, traffic has also become more of an issue.
“Everybody is in a hurry, you know,” said Brian Leyhew, who drives on Lascassas Pike every day. “Slow down and live would be a good motto for everyone.”
“Because there are so many drivers on the road, seemingly minor infractions such as following too closely, improper passing, and speeding are more dangerous,” said Cpl. Michael Rodgers, with the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office. “Another serious issue is road rage. Many drivers become angry due to traffic conditions and make poor decisions.”
Troopers in Wilson, Cannon and DeKalb counties will also participate.
The additional law enforcement presence will continue through the Summer.
