More than 7,300 boots are on display outside the 101st Airborne Division Headquarters to honor the men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

The department and Survivor Outreach Services helped put a ceremony together on 9/11 for the start of Military Survivor Appreciation Week.

Organizers opened to the community the display of boots collected across Fort Campbell and across the world.

They represent the fallen service member who died on active duty since 9/11.

The ceremony began with remarks by Brigadier General John Brennan and was followed with a laying of the wreath, moment of silence and ceremonial firing.

Families and soldiers were in attendance for the annual event.

One of those among the crowd was Stephanie Dostie. She volunteered to help collect the boots and organize the event with others for several months.

Her husband Shawn Dostie was killed in 2005 by an IED.

"Volunteering helps me remember Shawn and his sacrifice and the other men and women who gave their lives," Stephanie told NewsChannel 5. "You hear the numbers but when you see them on the ground, it really tells you how many lives we lost."

The display is open to the community until next Monday.

Someone will be available between 8 am and 4 pm to provide more information or help find a loved one.
