MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- The chief prosecutor in Memphis has asked the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation to look into a police officer's fatal shooting of a 19-year-old man.

Amy Weirich, the district attorney for Shelby County, said her office has handed the investigation into the death of Darrius Stewart to the state's police agency.

Police said Stewart was shot Friday when he attacked the officer as the officer went to handcuff him.

Stewart had been a passenger in a car that was stopped on a headlight violation. He was placed in the back of a squad car without handcuffs during a traffic stop as the officer checked on two active warrants for Stewart out of Iowa and Indiana.

The officer has been placed on administrative leave pending the results of the investigation.
