NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Police say a shooting suspect fled the scene of the crime with a 6-year-old in his vehicle Wednesday night.

Metro Nashville Police officers responded to a domestic call on the 2100 block of Vine Hill Road near the Wedgewood Houston area of town.

The victim called police saying the mother of his child was not letting him visit with their children. The victim then got into an argument with the mother's new boyfriend. Police say that's when the new boyfriend pulled a gun on the victim, who was in his Jeep Cherokee, and fired at him. He was hit in the lower part of his leg.

Officers were in the area. They say they overheard the shots and saw the suspect vehicle speeding away. A community engagement officer also saw the vehicle and followed it to the 2000 block of 8th Avenue South where he was taken into custody.

Officers found a 6-year-old in the vehicle and gave the child to his grandmother.

Officers are searching for the gun they believe was tossed from the suspect's vehicle. The victim was shot while he was sitting in his red Jeep Cherokee and sustained a gunshot wound to his lower leg. He was transported to Vanderbilt. The suspect was taken in for questioning.

Officer also responded to the home where they found the victim. He was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
