Dozens of elderly people in Dickson County have been struggling to put food on the table this holiday season.
According to the Meals on Wheels site coordinator, 57 people were on their waiting list as of Monday.
The charity recently moved to Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Dickson.
"We serve approximately 65 to 70 meals per day," Gale Adams said.
This church has opened its doors for free so that Meals on Wheels can keep operating.
"We have 57 clients on our waiting list, and some of them have been on there for a long long time," Adams said.
Adams wishes they could serve everyone, but donations have been scarce.
"It's so sad. If we put someone on and then our funds become low, then that particular person may have to be taken off, and we don't want that to happen," Adams said.
Volunteers like Mary Mangrum keep Meals on Wheels from having to pay drivers.
"I've been doing it for 15 years, and I love it," Mangrum said.
Monday through Friday, volunteers bring milk and meals to people like Cleveland Sanders.
"This is what they feed me right here: apple, orange, everything," Sanders said.
Sanders has been receiving meals for about three years.
"I've been sick at the hospital and a nursing home," Sanders said.
On Monday he was thankful for his corn, Brussels sprouts, and spaghetti.
"A whole lot, I got to eat," Sanders said.
So as Mr. Sanders enjoyed his spaghetti, Adams has been trying to find a way to help dozens of people who remain on the waiting list.
"We need funds. We need money," Adams said.
