A driver has been charged in connection with a crash that knocked out power to nearly 300 homes in Nashville.

The incident happened just after midnight Thursday at the intersection of Myatt Drive and Roosevelt Avenue.

Officials with Metro Nashville police said a woman accidentally shot herself at an apartment complex and Michael Maldonado tried to drive her to an area hospital.

However, on the way police said he collided with a power pole and landed in a ditch.

The crash led to more than 250 people losing electricity for several hours.

According to an affidavit, one neighbor told police he could smell alcohol on Maldonado. He’s also accused of trying to walk away from the scene.

Maldonado has a previous DUI conviction in Rutherford County and another pending DUI in Davidson County.

He faces five charges, including DUI and resisting arrest.
