A man was arrested and charged in connection to a hit and run crash on Myatt Drive in Madison that killed a homeless woman.

According to police, 48-year-old Gregorio Juarez Morente admitted he was driving the 2002 Chevrolet Venture minivan that struck 47-year-old Jennifer Lee Hayward on May 9.

Morente was arrested Tuesday night at his home on Bridgeway Avenue. He said he abandoned the minivan in a Gallatin Pike parking lot where it was recovered the same night.

The van sustained damage consistent with striking Hayward, but police say it had been cleaned out and the license plate removed.

Morente reported that Hayward stepped out in front of the vehicle, but he was frightened after the incident and drove away.

Morente was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal crash, failure to render aid, driving on a suspended license, and driving without insurance.  He was jailed in lieu of $10,000 bond.
