Officials with Metro Nashville Police said the driver of a pickup truck fell asleep and collided with a tractor trailer that was waiting to turn left.
The impact of the crash caused the pickup to burst into flames. Workers from a nearby business ran to the scene to help put out the fire.
The driver was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with critical injuries. His condition has since been elevated to stable.
Elm Hill Pike remains closed while officials work to clean up a fuel leak.
