NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Metro police say a driver who picked up four men late Tuesday night ended up intentionally crashing his car after they tried to rob him.

According to police, a driver picked up four men to give them a ride around 11:30 p.m. when they tried to rob him at knifepoint.

Police say he pulled his own gun in self-defense and shot one of the suspects in the leg. However, they kept attacking him, so he intentionally crashed his car into a concrete loading dock off Woodycrest Avenue in South Nashville.

After the crash, police say the other men in the car were able to get control of the driver's gun. They fired shots at him as he ran off to call for help.

Officers arrived to find the man who was shot, collapsed and bleeding on nearby Fesslers Lane. The three other suspects managed to escape the scene.

The driver was taken to an area hospital to have his injuries from the crash checked-out. His car is a wreck but crashing it may have saved his life by stopping that knife attack.
