NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Vice Mayor Jim Shulman hosted an early vote barbecue at the Bordeaux Library Branch.
Usually you don't want to discuss politics around the dinner table, but candidates and supporters are breaking bread together with barbecue and cat fish meals at the voting rally.
There's only two days left to early vote in the Nashville mayoral election. Several candidates were there ahead of polls closing.
Many candidates are fighting to retain their seats while others are running for the first time. We're told this annual election rally typically draws a good size crowd and is one of the most critical campaigning moments for candidates.
So far at the Bordeaux polling place location more than 3 thousand voters cast their ballot as of Thursday evening, and there are nearly 400 thousand active voters in Nashville.
In 2015, during that last General election just over 53 thousand voters voted at the Bordeaux library location. The Secretary of State's office indicating that early voting numbers are low.
Candidates and campaign staff are working hard to get people out to vote, especially getting more blacks out to vote and that representation was shown with the candidates vying for seats on metro council, council at large and mayor.
Other positions on the ballot include vice mayor and as well as two amendements.
AMENDMENT ONE: Mayor required to submit dept performance & debt info to Metro Council.
- A yes vote is a vote in favor of requiring the mayor to submit the following information to Metro Council each year: performance and efficiency metrics for depts and agencies that get city funding, total city debt and comparisons to previous years, debt per capital, a summary of un-issued but already authorized debt.
- A no vote is a vote against requiring the mayor to submit that info. Nothing changes.
AMENDMENT TWO: Metro Board of Education process for vacancies.
- A yes vote is a vote in favor of amending the charter to say that metro BoE vacancies are filled by the city legislative body, rather than the remaining BoE members. This would make the charter compatible with current practices and state law.
- A no vote is a vote against amending the charter concerning BoE vacancies. This would leave the charter language incompatible with state law and current practices.
You can early vote Friday and Saturday at any of the eleven early voting locations.
