Hopkinsville Homeowners Cash In On Eclipse

Posted

David Griffith never dreamed of renting out his home in Hopkinsville's historic district.

"I mean, there are hotels, why would you rent my house?" he said.

But in less than three weeks, a total solar eclipse will pass directly over his roof. Nearby hotels and campgrounds have been booked solid, so he listed his home on Airbnb for the first time last week.

"People know what it is because of the lakes, we're not far from there, so people kind of know what it is," he said. "To think that there's many listed Airbnb properties I would have to think the eclipse is the sole reason any are listed."

Griffith has listed his three bedroom, two bath home for just over $1,500, and he's not alone.

Kelly Gates listed her home on a website the city of Hopkinsville launched specifically for eclipse home rentals. She's charging a $400 non-refundable deposit and $350 a night, with a minimum three-night stay.

In Clarksville, single rooms have been listed on Airbnb for more than $2,500 a night.

But Kelly said her choice to rent has been about more than making money, though she wouldn't do it for free.

"I want people to come and see the southern charm and a once in a lifetime event," she said.
