Tuition Freeze Bill Advancing In State Senate

A move to freeze tuition at public colleges and universities has been advancing in the state Senate.

Just this week, the bill passed a unanimous vote in the Senate education committee.

Under the bill, students would pay the same tuition for all four years in college, and any major hike would have to get a unanimous approval by school leaders.

Lieutenant Governor Ron Ramsey talked about it this week saying he thinks they've come up with an interesting concept.

“Twenty years ago, college tuition was at 7 percent of the average household income in the state of Tennessee, and I think anybody could've figured out a way of cutting back and figured out a way to save 7 percent so someone in your family could go to college,” Ramsey said. “Now it's 28 percent of household income.  That gets a little bit tougher.”

The bill was far from becoming law. In fact, it hasn't started moving yet in the state House.
