COLUMBIA, Tenn. – An 86-year-old man was killed Thursday in an officer-involved shooting in Maury County.
The incident happened around 1 p.m. in the 1000 block of Bear Creek Pike in Columbia.
Officials with the Columbia Police Department said they received a call that a man, armed with weapons, had left his home in his truck and was threatening suicide.
Authorities later spotted the truck and initiated a traffic stop. The man got out of the vehicle and allegedly pointed a gun at officers.
Police officials said the officers fired at the man in self-defense. He was struck and pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not released.
Investigators said the three officers involved in the shooting were not hurt.
Bear Creek Road has been closed between Cranford Hollow Road and Rock Springs Road as a result of the incident.
More than a dozen shell casings littered the roadway where the shooting took place. The road will remain closed while forensic scientists continue processing the scene.
Those officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of the investigation, which is standard procedure.
