Two Hickman County deputies saved an 87-year-old woman struggling to escape a house fire.

Flames erupted around 3:45 Monday morning.

Cpl. Beard and Deputy Lindsey, who were out patrolling the area at the time, arrived on scene before firefighters. When they arrived, five people outside told them one woman hadn’t escaped.

“It’s something that’s inside them where they act in those situations instead of run away from them,” said Lt. Cody Woods who was also on scene working with the Centerville Fire Department. “You can’t train that, it’s just something they’re born with.”

Cpl. Beard worked to spray water on flames using a garden hose while Deputy Lindsey ran inside the home’s front door.

Inside, he found 87-year-old Lena Judd. Lindsey carried Judd down the front steps of the home to safety.
“I feel blessed to be alive,” Judd said. “I thank the Lord they got here so quick.’

Firefighters arrived minutes later and fought the flames and strong winds for about three hours.
The home is a total loss, but the family is grateful everyone made it out safely.
