A first of its kind event was held with the aim of encouraging more African American men to go into health-related fields.

The event at Meharry Medical College Saturday provided an opportunity for more than 120 students to hear from two Nashville physicians.

The summit was titled “Navigating the Pre-Health Path: An Event for Black Men Interested in the Health Professions.”

The President of Meharry, Dr. James Hildreth, and the Chief Diversity Officer at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Dr. Andre Churchwell, were featured on panel discussions.

They joined current students from both schools to talk about how to prepare to pursue jobs in the health profession and get into medical schools.

Organizers called the summit "historic" and added it was free and open to black males in high school, college, or post college.
