A former Tennessee State University football player has been charged with assault after allegedly hitting a coach during a game.
According to an affidavit from Metro Nashville Police, Latrelle Allazay Lee was booked and released Monday night on a felony assault charge.
The incident happened on November 11 during TSU’s game against Southeast Missouri State at Hale Stadium.
A police report said the alleged victim was “attempting to have the home football players stand behind the white regulation line during the game, and while giving verbal directives to the players, the victim was struck multiple times about his face by [Lee]. Once struck about the face by the defendant, the victim fell to the ground and was dazed and somewhat unconscious from the punches.”
According to university officials, Lee was immediately dismissed from the sideline by head coach Rod Reed for improper misconduct.
Director of Athletics Teresa Phillips released the following statement:
“We, of course, do not condone any act of violence within our department and are very disturbed by the action of one of our students. We are committed to supporting the coach who was personally affected and our concern now is with him.”
