NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Advocates are calling for crosswalks on one of Nashville busiest roadways after a beloved father passed away over the weekend from injuries he sustained in a hit-and-run crash last month.

Lino Gutierrez Vargas was hit and killed while crossing Nolensville Pike near Elysian Fields road on August 25, his family says they are frustrated police still haven't been able to identify the driver.

Vargas joins a growing number of pedestrians in Nashville who has either been seriously injured or kill while trying to cross the street.

"We should be able to do something as simple as crossing the street without getting killed," said Rochelle Carpenter who leads the Envision Nolensville Pike Collaborative.

Carpenter says Nolensville Pike is largely lacking in sidewalks, which creates problems in an area where most people rely on the bus for transportation.

"The message this should send is that we need more crosswalks on Nolensville Pike," she added.

As for Lino Vargas' family, they are holding a funeral on Saturday and are hoping newly released security video might help identify the driver responsible for the crash.
