NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — One year after a falling concrete slab killed a man driving on Interstate-24, the victims family is still hoping for answers about what happened.

Joe Shelton Jr. was driving to work on Nov. 20, 2018 when a 23 lb. chunk of concrete, coming from the Shelby Avenue Bridge, fell through his windshield.

"Today's been very rough," Kim Shelton, Joe Shelton Jr.'s wife, said. "Yesterday was very rough because I knew today was coming and it was the one year anniversary."

Kim recalled she got a call from her son, Zach, saying Joe had not made it to work that morning.

"I immediately started calling hospitals trying to find out if my husband was hurt, where he was at, so I could get to him," she said. "Every hospital I called, they didn't have him."

First responders said Joe had died at the scene.

"It's very hard, reliving that thought of what happened a year ago today and reliving those pains," Zach Shelton said.

They said it's made even harder by the fact they still don't know exactly what happened. Police haven't determined whether the slab fell or was thrown. Despite several pleas for information, including billboards, banners and fliers, there have been no arrests and few developments

"We're just trying to understand it all still to this day," Kim said. "I don't think I will ever get closure until I really know what happened. Until I have that, I don't know if I'll ever heal from it, honestly."

The family is still offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in this case. If you know anything about Shelton's death, you are urged to call 615-74-CRIME.
