NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — A Nashville family continues to keep the memory of their patriarch alive during the one year anniversary of his violent death.

Robert Payne, 70, died during a carjacking in the 1800 block of N. 10th street on January 12, 2018.

On the one year anniversary of his death his family held a memorial with cake, balloons and fellowship to honor him.

"He was always there for us, he was always there for me. Anything he could do for you he would do it," niece Tonya Wade-Moody said.

Police said the accused killer, 25-year-old Queshan Brooks, car-jacked Payne and a friend before shooting and killing Payne. Prior to the car-jacking that same day, Brooks is accused of shooting and killing his 5-and-8-year-old step-sisters.

Payne's older sister said he would help anyone in need, even strangers.

"If you were walking down the street and it was his first time seeing you, if you needed some kind of help no matter what kind it was he was there for you. He wouldn't say a word, he would just turn around and say what do you need, how can I help you. To everybody," Dorris Payne–Wade said.

Payne was a Vietnam Veteran.

Brooks is scheduled to be in court on February 28.
