NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — The family of a father killed in a shooting one week ago said he died because of a jealousy issue.

Brandon Mullins, 32, was found in the parking lot of the Union on Thompson Apartments after he was shot early Monday morning. Officials with the Metro Nashville Police Department said his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend confronted them in a hallway of the complex.

Court documents said it was Caleb Walker, 19, who approached them and started a fight with Mullins. The girlfriend called 911 and heard multiple gunshots.

She told police how she's seen Walker carry a gun before which matched with the casings found at the scene.

"I'm hurt by the whole situation because you never expect it to be your son," Mullins' mother Lucy Clay told NewsChannel 5.

Clay and her son worked at the same Krystal restaurant on West Trinity Lane and had just closed the store for the night. Not even an hour since her son took an Uber ride to the complex, she received a call from a family member that he was shot.

"His last words to me was, 'Momma, I'll be home Monday, I love you,'" Clay recalled. "Whatever happened it could have been an altercation between him and her and my son just stepped in the way."

Although the exact reason for the argument is unknown, the family claims Mullins was killed because Walker was jealous. Mullins had only been dating his girlfriend for three weeks.

"It's crazy and it doesn't make sense. I mean you just started talking to this girl and you end up dead," aunt Karen Taylor added.

Walker was arrested that afternoon and faces criminal homicide. He's currently being held in jail without bond and is expected to appear in court on Tuesday morning.
