MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WTVF) — On Monday night, China said that it would halt all imports of U.S. agricultural products, alarming some politicians, while leaving farmers across Tennessee feeling like they've been caught in the cross-hairs of a trade war once again.
Last week, President Trump announced he would be adding 10% tariffs on Chinese imports, in a retaliatory move China announced they would no longer import U.S. farm products like corn and soybeans.
It's a move that could be devastating for the nation's farmers as China is one of the world's largest consumers of U.S. ag. products.
"We may just be in a revolutionary time here," said Will Hutchinson a farmer who lives in Rutherford County.
Hutchinson said he understands why politicians in Washington D.C. are trying to negotiate with China but is worried an escalated trade war could impact crop prices come harvest time in the fall.
"We just have to focus on doing a good job. It's certainly been challenging but I haven't given up hope yet."
