A crash killing two people and injuring three others in Putnam County closed State Route 136 as officials investigated.

The crash happened Monday evening around 4:40 p.m. on SR 136 at Bear Creek Road. Tennessee Highway Patrol officials said two people were killed in the crash and three others were critically injured.

Hwy 136 was closed in both directions, north and south, and traffic was diverted to alternate routes.

Officials said 21-year-old Joshua E. Burkett and 66-year-old Kathleen A. Maynard were killed in the crash.

The preliminary report indicated that Burkett's 2013 Honda CRV was travelling South on Hwy 136 when it crossed the centerline hitting a 2013 Chevy Impala carrying Kathleen Maynard and her family head-on.

Inside the Impala was also 67-year-old David Maynard, who was driving, 15-year-old Nikita Maynard, and 12-year-old Damon Maynard.

The passenger with Burkett, 26-year-old Kayla Randolph, was also injured.

All three were injured, and both teens were taken by air to Vanderbilt University Children’s Hospital, where Nakita was in critical condition and Damon in stable condition.

The report stated that Burkett was the only one not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Alcohol or drugs were not involved in the crash.
