Fathers, Students Enjoy 'Take Your Child To School Day'

Posted

It was a special start to the school day for hundreds of students at one Nashville school.

Dozens of fathers came to Tom Joy Elementary in East Nashville Wednesday morning as part of "Take Your Child to School Day."

The fathers and father figures were treated to donuts, and they were even honored with a special parade down the hallways.

The school started the tradition four years ago to get more men involved in their children's lives, and it has always been a big hit.

"I've been here three years doing this, and every time I do this, it's been a joy,” one father said. “My kids, when they see me, they're ready to jump out of the line to come see me. My kids don't live with me, and I miss a lot, but whenever I have a chance to do things, I do whatever it is."

The principal said the kids enjoy the event almost as much as the fathers do. She added it's a fun and easy way to get more dads involved in their kids' education - something experts agree has been critically important in student success.
