KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- The University of Tennessee said Edward J. Boling, who served as president of the school system for 18 years from 1970 to 1988, has died. He was 93.

UT said Boling's tenure is the longest in recent history, and he will be remembered for the relationships he formed with staff and students, as well as his dedication to private fundraising and to supporting the growth of women's sports.

UT President Joe DiPietro said Boling "embodied a dedication and devotion" to the school. Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville has carried his name.

Boling earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at UT, and received his doctorate in education from Peabody College at Vanderbilt University.

He was survived by his wife, Carolyn, three sons and six grandchildren.
