Officials with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said they’ve arrested a former volunteer fire chief for reportedly stealing from Humphreys County.

Authorities confirmed 45-year-old Michael Simpson was indicted by the Humphreys County Grand Jury on Monday.

TBI Agents joined investigators with the Tennessee Office of the Comptroller on July 11, 2016 to investigate a theft allegation.

Simpson was the Humphreys County District 2 Fire Chief at that time, and during the investigation, information was developed that between January 2014 and August 2016, Simpson allegedly stole approximately $75,691 from the Humphreys County Fire Department and Humphreys County.

TBI agents said Simpson used two bank accounts that he had sole control of in order to give some of the money to his personal credit cards. He also reportedly made personal purchases.

Simpson was charged with one count of theft over $60,000.

Officials confirmed he was arrested on Tuesday and booked into the Humphreys County Jail on a $75,000 bond.
