Germantown Task Force Conducts Survey To Tackle Traffic, Safety Problems

Neighborhood associations with Germantown and Salemtown created a task force to address safety, traffic and parking problems as rapid growth continues.

The group conducted a survey to pin point access and mobility issues that have concerned residents. About 300 people answered the survey which asked them what the major problems were and ways to improve.

Germantown continues to see exponential growth and changes as more restaurants and residential properties are being built. However, officials worry one of the most popular neighborhoods in Nashville will see more consequences.

"The influx of people and the traffic and parking issues developed a consequence and it's apparent to most people." Historic Germantown Neighborhood Association President Richard Audet told NewsChannel 5.

Survey results showed that majority thought lack of street lighting, insufficient number of police cameras and sidewalk closures are the biggest concern.

The survey suggested having four-way stops throughout the neighborhood and one way streets to change the flow of traffic and improve corner visibility.

The task force would like to explore making 4th and 6th Avenues, Taylor and Madison as one way streets, and add center street striping on appropriate streets.

As far as parking, residents said they would like increased visibility parking availability and more resident-only permit parking

The group presented the survey to the Metro Public Works and Planning Department last week in hopes the city will help solve the problems. They were asked to come up with a street by street recommendation.

"We need experts who will come in and tell us what the most viable solutions are. We have identified the problems through the survey and I think we need helps as far as solutions because many of them are beyond the scope of the neighborhoods to address," Audet added.

Audet also wants businesses to start coming up with solutions to address parking problems.
